Greenheart Timber and Shackleton's Legacy
Greenheart timber is renowned for its exceptional strength, durability, and resistance to decay. Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, particularly Guyana, this wood has been a preferred choice for marine construction, including docks, piers, and shipbuilding
One of the most fascinating connections between greenheart timber and history is its use in the many ships used by Sir Ernest Shackleton, the legendary Anglo-Irish Antarctic explorer in his expeditions.
Both ships, Endurance and Quest were partially constructed using greenheart timber. The hulls were lined externally with greenheart to act as an ice-breaker (that's how strong the timber is).
Known for his incredible leadership and resilience, Shackleton's expeditions are a testament to human endurance and the spirit of exploration. Similar endurance is required to work with this timber not traditionally used in furniture making due to its density.
At Copperfish, we have extensive experience working with a variety of timbers, including some of the densest and most challenging woods. This expertise allows us to understand the unique properties of each type of wood and how to best handle it.
Specialized Tools
We use specialized tools and equipment designed to handle dense timbers. For example, our 100-year-old saw is perfect for cutting through tough woods like greenheart, which modern machinery might struggle with. This saw allows us to maintain the integrity of the wood while ensuring precise cuts.
Traditional Techniques
We employ traditional woodworking techniques that have been refined over generations. These methods are particularly effective for working with dense timbers, as they allow us to carefully shape and finish the wood without compromising its strength or character.
Commitment to Quality
Our commitment to quality means we take the time to work with each piece of timber individually, ensuring that it is treated with the care and respect it deserves. This attention to detail is crucial when working with dense, old timbers like greenheart, which require a delicate touch to bring out their best qualities.
At Copperfish, our ability to work with dense timbers like greenheart is a reflection of our dedication to preserving the history and character of each piece of wood, while also pushing the boundaries of what is possible in woodworking. We think Shackleton would have appreciated our dedication and determination.
