Our Timber

At Copperfish, the materials we use has always been at the heart of what we do.   We focus on ancient or storm-fallen timber, carefully selected for its character and provenance, each with its own story to tell.

Our salvaged timber comes from old buildings, churches, and dockyards. This well-traveled wood often bears historical marks like axe cuts and bolt holes. Some pieces were submerged for centuries, covered in barnacles, and needing time to dry out.

The age of this timber imparts a beautiful grain and character that simply can't be found in newer wood.  It also takes patience and determination to work with this timber given its age and provenance.

We also use storm-fallen wood, often spalted beech or Irish yew. These trees have fallen naturally during storms, and the wood is typically very old, telling a story of resilience and natural beauty.

Types of Timber We Use

  • Oak: Known for its lovely honey shade, oak is a versatile timber that complements most interiors. Our oak is sourced from old churches and barnds and its beauty and timeless appeal make it a favorite in our collection.

  • Irish Yew: This timber is closely connected to Irish heritage and is one of Ireland's ancient mythical trees. It often features distinctive patterns and a rich hue, making each piece unique.

  • Pitch Pine: Salvaged from old buildings, pitch pine is centuries old and retains a fresh scent when cut. Its strong, aromatic qualities make it a standout choice.

  • Jarrah: This dense timber, originally used as ballast on convict ships from Australia, has a rich plum or purple color. Its density requires special tools to work with, adding to its exclusivity.

  • Spalted Beech: Known for its distinctive patterns due to fungal growth, spalted beech is a local favorite sourced from within 20 miles of our workshop.

  • Greenheart: This exceptionally dense and durable timber is used for marine said to have been used on Shakleton's ship due to its resistance to decay. Its rich greenish-brown hue adds a unique touch to our designs.
